Important Information About Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a year-round activity and permits are issued every day. However, most people prefer to visit Uganda during dry month season which is between June - September and again between December - Febuary each year.
It is estimated that there are only around 1000 Mountain gorillas left in the world. The good news is that with implemented conservation efforts between Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC their numbers are slowly rising. And Uganda hosts more than half of remaining gorillas in the world.
Mountain Gorillas can only be found in the Virunga mountains in the DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda and also in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Uganda holds 60% of the total mountain gorillas left in the world with about 400 of them residing in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi is the most popular place to trek the gorillas in Uganda.
The park is located in the Southwestern part of the country and is one of the most diverse national parks in East Africa.
Bwindi forest is divided into four regions also called sectors: Buhoma sector, Ruhija sector, Rushaga sector, and Nkuringo sector. And the independent Mgahinga group which is found in Mgahinga mountain.

A typical day of trekking starts at a designated meeting point for briefing by staff / park rangers. Briefing starts at 8:00am with a short video about gorilla' life by Ugandan Wildlife Authority.
From here visitors are divided into different groups of about 8/9 people. according to Age and Fittness.
Some groups start trekking / walking right from the park offices, while others will have to drive to a short distance into the middle of forest to start walking along with park rangers and porters who help to carry bags of visitors. (bags may contain first aid kits, packed food, drinking bottled water.
Finding the gorillas can take anywhere from Two to Five hours (sometimes longer). These are wild animals and the trackers have to locate where the gorillas have gone each day. (Trackers are park rangers who go in-advance to ensures safety of gorillas in the jungle, but also help visitor find gorillas with ease. They cordinate with park rangers escorting visitors to locate them on cordinates using walk-talk also known as Radio call).
Ugandan gorilla permits cost individuals $800 per person for one day with the gorillas, while the Rwandan gorilla permits cost $1500. per person.
People prefer going gorilla trekking in Uganda as they are cheaper than in Rwanda and Uganda also holds more gorillas than neighboring countries and besides the gorillas, there is plenty of other wildlife and birdlife to see in the country! Such as the tree-climbing lions of Queen Elizabeth National Park as well as Boat cruise for 2 hours on Kazinga Channel with vast animals to see during the cruising. crocodiles, Hippos, elephants among others
Visit Gorillas, The price to see the gorillas for just one hour is expensive. However, it’s important to understand that gorillas are critically endangered animals. We learned that 25% of the money earned from gorilla trekking in Uganda goes back to the local communities. Tourism creates local jobs. And the majority of the permit contributes to the conservation of the mountain gorillas.
